Week 13 ELL

Reading the reading rockets site was a very interesting read. Throughout the videos and articles I read, I noticed some common threads that ran through all of them. One of them, was the important point of providing ELL's with the proper learning environment. ELLs need to feel challenged, but the work needs to be doable. ELL's need encouragement. ELL's need to feel welcome in class. ELL's need extra help to learn, such as visual aids. When working with my ELL, I try to incorporate the proper learning environment with components like these to provide optimal learning. I try to challenge my student, yet I make sure that I not challenging her too much. I give constant words of encouragement (which I find helpful for any kind of student- who doesn't want to feel like they did a good job?). I make my student feel welcome. I also teach my student with multi-modal education, so that she can learn to read with many different entry points- visuals, videos, pictures, coloring,...

Week 12 Assignment 2

Summary: Integrating technology into literacy can be very beneficial. It makes things more fun for the students. Digital storybooks are a great forum for students to use technology to publish their work. A site that I liked and would incorporate into my classroom is Kidpix. Students write a story, and pick all sorts of animations to go along with the story. The story they wrote comes alive! This makes writing even more fun. Additionally, digital books can be used for specific content areas and in any grades: cookbooks for math, books about what they learned in science, etc. Another point about integrating technology into literacy class is that it prepares students for post-school years, when they will need to be familiar with ICT. Even young students can begin using the internet (supervised) and word processing documents for their work (I remember doing this as a kid!). I would definitely promote usage of ICTs in my class.

Week 7 Assignment #5

I tested on an ELL student on these four areas. The student is an ELL students in 4th grade. She never learned to read English. However, she speaks a lot of English at home. On print awareness, the student was fairly good. She showed me the front cover and the back cover. As she does not know how to read, she guessed where the author's name would be. She showed me a choice on the front cover as well as the cover page (inside) the book. Both were correct. When I asked her to show me a letter, she pointed to a word. I explained to her in Hebrew what a letter is and she showed it to me correctly. After explaining what a sentence is, she was able to point one out to me. I hinted to her to look at the period at the end of the sentence and that helped her more. As for the other areas, she could not read at all. Some websites that would help this ELL are: abcya.com kizphonics scholastic.com These website are for beginners. This would be perfect for her!

Week #9

A QRI is an informal reading inventory and is used to assess readers’ levels. Teachers provide students with word lists of their grade level. The teacher uses the results of these word lists to assess students’ levels. With the results, the teacher can group students according to level, know what to teach, help the students, or go on with the QRI to read a short paragraph of the student’s correct level. The teacher has the students read a paragraph while she does a running record. Then, the teacher asks the students to retell the story. The results of the QRI can be used by teachers to determine, reading groups, books for individual use or literature circles, class books, and student growth. DIBELS is an assessment used to check if students are on par with their grade level. DIBELS include a number of mini-assessments.
