Week 7 Assignment #5

I tested on an ELL student on these four areas.
The student is an ELL students in 4th grade. She never learned to read English. However, she speaks a lot of English at home.
On print awareness, the student was fairly good. She showed me the front cover and the back cover. As she does not know how to read, she guessed where the author's name would be. She showed me a choice on the front cover as well as the cover page (inside) the book. Both were correct. When I asked her to show me a letter, she pointed to a word. I explained to her in Hebrew what a letter is and she showed it to me correctly. After explaining what a sentence is, she was able to point one out to me. I hinted to her to look at the period at the end of the sentence and that helped her more.
As for the other areas, she could not read at all.

Week 4 Assignment 1

An RTI, or Response to intervention, is early intervention for students with learning disabilities. The main facet of RTI are the multiple tiers. Parental involvement and professionalism are important throughout the tiers. There are 3 tiers in an RTI. Tier 1 is the 1st step and lowest tier involves little intervention. Students are given excellent instruction to rule out the possibility of bad instruction causing students to be lacking in knowledge. Students are screened to see their progress. This goes on for a certain period of time, usually about 8 weeks. If students are not up to par, they are moved to tier 2. In tier 2, students receive instruction based on their needs. It can be done in different group sizes and different frequencies. This step usually lasts about 8 weeks.
