Week 5

Mary started to read Level 1 word list. However, as she was at independent level, she was moved up a grade level, to level 2 word list. Here, she was at borderline between frustration and instructional level, so she was moved to Level 3. She was at frustrational level here and was moved back to grade 2. Reading the grade two passage, she raid fairly well. She was also able to do the retelling partially unguided. All in all, I think Mary remains at level two instructional level as she did not do level 2 perfectly. Rather, she made a number of mistakes which suggest that she use instruction at this level.

A QRI is an informal reading inventory and is used to assess readers’ levels. Teachers provide students with word lists of their grade level. The teacher uses the results of these word lists to assess students’ levels. Week 4 Assignment 1

An RTI, or Response to intervention, is early intervention for students with learning disabilities. The main facet of RTI are the multiple tiers. Parental involvement and professionalism are important throughout the tiers. There are 3 tiers in an RTI. Tier 1 is the 1st step and lowest tier involves little intervention. Students are given excellent instruction to rule out the possibility of bad instruction causing students to be lacking in knowledge. Students are screened to see their progress. This goes on for a certain period of time, usually about 8 weeks. If students are not up to par, they are moved to tier 2. In tier 2, students receive instruction based on their needs. It can be done in different group sizes and different frequencies. This step usually lasts about 8 weeks.
